If the ring is marked 14K and you thought at first it was silver, I would say it is comprised of 14K white gold. 14K is a U.S. gold mark and the decimal equivalent is .585
The percentage of other metals determine the karat (K) of the gold.
White gold is a mixture of gold, nickel and zinc.
