Hi John,
As with most things, something is worth what the market will support. in the past pearls were a wardrobe staple. Times have changed and people are not wearing them as frequently as in the past. Additionally the Chinese currently are marketing freshwater pearls that rival the "look" of fine Akoya sea pearls. A fine quality strand that has been well cared for will hold its value, but would not increase much if any. Pearls that are exceptionally large and flawless, or ones that are Natural Pearls, not cultured would increase in value over time due to their rarity.
