Gold Test It. by: Anonymous
Hi Gene
the jewelry mark " 18 K " was used by -
K Palmer & Capron mostly on Gold Filled & Plated Rings, Manufacturing Jewelers, Providence, RI, USA - ca 1852 - 1916
I would acid test this ring, although I know you mention it is beautiful, there is still the possibility it is gold filled. Many gold-filled pieces are important, beautiful and valuable.
If you do not have gold testing equipment that can read gold plating, the only way to be sure is to file a mark deep enough to pass any gold sheets to the base metal. The nick made with a narrow file, must be in an inconspicuous spot. If after it effervesces, it turns green at the mark where you drop the nitric acid, this indicates gold over a base metal.
If you carry out this test property you shouldn't be able to see where you did the test, it should be even hard to spot under jewelers loupe, however many collectors and investors prefer to use a higher-end gold digital tester.
