What does a natural pearl really symbolize?

I was told a pearl does not symbolize beauty, purity, etc. It symbolizes sadness, depression, death, etc. Can you please set this straight for me. I'm interested in knowing the real symbolism and where it came from, whether it's positive or negative- pertaining to the pearl.
