Pink Gemstones and 10 carat gold ring by: Anonymous
Hi DJ there are so many crowns. Just check to see if it's not the letter W
which is the maker's mark of JOHN R. WOOD & SONS who merged with LENOX, Inc. in 1970. Mostly found on Gold rings, manufacturing jewelers, New York, NY, USA) - ca 1850 - 1970.
10 is for 10 karat gold. It is very hard-wearing and investment worthy as the strength of the metal means it can better withstand the passage of time than higher carat gold which is softer.
The pink sapphire in this ring, looks amazing. The Sapphire is from the Corundum gemstone family. It measures 9 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, which means the gemstone itself, can withstand (under normal conditions) the passage of time.
Almost all sapphire gemstones are treated in labratories. Most sapphires, when they are taken from the earth have very poor clarity and tend to have dark dull colors. Sapphires that have not been exposed to any kind of treatment but still have good color and clarity are extremely rare (about 1% of sapphires) and can be very expensive.
Good information on how to assess the quality and value of gemstones including sapphires can be found in the link Gemstone Shoppers in the Jewelry Resources.
You can find a list of gemstones here, and an image of a pair of pink sapphire earrings at the top of the page, the divine pink color looks similar to the pink stone in your ring.
