It didn't seem to react in any way to the hot pin test.

Flat Surface on Back of Cameo by: Anonymous
Thank you Anon for your comment. Disappointing it may be but we like to know the scientific facts about this cameo material. The white splashes on the subject do look resinous - although this could be a reflection from the camera. The reverse does look very flat as you mentioned.
Laurie how did it react when you hot pin tested it?
Regards Rebecca

Cameo...is it shell? I don't think so. by: Anonymous
Hate to disappoint you all, but this cameo is made of man made material. Resin of some sort. The back is straight, not curved like the shell would be and it's full of deep scratches, so it's very soft.

Another Helmet Shell - BULLMOUTH by: Rita
Ladies, it turns out there is more than one variety of Helmet Shell. The traditional cameo shell of Italy is the Flame or Bullmouth Helmet - "cassis rufa" - it is found on the African coast and is commonly called the Carnelian shell. I guess they called it "carnelian" shell because of it's rich shade of red-brown.

Not Pink Conch by: Anonymous
It doesn't look like pink conch shell as that's more of a pinkish color; the cameo subject's head, will be white against a pink background with striations of pinkish color like highlights carved throughout her hair.

Looks Like Emperor Shell for Greek Goddess Cameo by: Anonymous
the shell material looks brownish in color in the photo, so it could be the emperor helmet; this is a brown and white shell. Thanks for the Neutrogena shampoo tip Peggy :-)

British Lion Greek cameo Goddess by: Peggy
Hi Laurie
your carving of Greek Goddess Ceres has an obstinate look of determination comparable to a British lion!
However, take care when you clean her, warm mild soap solution like Neutrogena shampoo with soft brush, no commercial jewelry cleaners, they often contain chemicals. Is the surround yellow or rose gold BTW?
Usually amber is tested with a hot pin, although this type of test is not recommended, as it can damage your item.
Congratulations, on what appears to be an Antique Cameo. In Greek mythology, Demeter is the goddess of the harvest, who was leader over grains, the fertility of the earth, the seasons and the harvest. Apparently , one of her surnames is "Sito" (σίτος: wheat) as the giver of food or corn. http://www.antiquecameos.net/demeterivory.htm
Though Demeter is often described simply as the goddess of the harvest, she also was pole star of the sanctity of marriage, the sacred law, and the cycle of life and death.
Demeter also known as CERES and her daughter Persephone were the central figure-heads of the Eleusinian Mysteries that were celebrated until 395 AD which predated the Olympian parthenon.
