Virginia gold

I received a wedding band passed down a few generations with a clear stamping of VIRGINIA GOLD. Can you tell me if this is real? It has bad scratches on the outside and looks gold plated but the inside is completely smooth with no scratches or tarnishing. I can't find any information on it. Thanks
