Hi, I I have a ring dated 1854, Birmingham assay office and 22 carats. But no one can tell me who the manufacturer was from the hallmark. Any ideas? Be very grateful for your help. Glyn

British Date Letters from 1924 - 1974 by: Anonymous
Anne, you might also try hunting down the date letter in the link "British Hallmarking Info including Date Letter Charts to 1974"( if you don't find a match in the date letters to 1924). The link is in the Jewelry Resources.
Yes, I meant to add before, great work, the anchor is Birmingham :-)

Researching British Hallmarks by: Anonymous
Hi Anne! thanks for writing in. OK. Full British Hallmarks.
The PLAT is the notation for PLATINUM. The ring is comprised of 18ct gold & Platinum. By 1900 Platinum was very popular and continued to be so throughout the 1930s.
The Maker's Initials are those of William Griffiths & Sons (Silversmiths, Birmingham, UK) - ca 1890s - 1910s The P letter that's in a "joined up style of writing" sometimes called Cursive, will be the date letter.
Click on the link that says "Birmingham Date Letters: 1773 - 1924 & Maker's Marks" in Researching British Hallmarks and compare the letter P and the shield it's in with the column of letters you will find in the Birmingham date letter chart and you should arrive at a year between 1890 and 1910. If the year is before 1901 then it's technically correct to describe the jewelry as Victorian!
