very old pearls would need to go to a gem lab with radiography equipment to determine if the pearls are natural, BEFORE you restring.
Natural Pearls are very rare and valuable. This is the first thing you should do - determine if the pearls are natural or not natural. They cannot be cultured pearls due to their great age.
Please, do not go by anyone's valued opinion, no matter how well meaning. Only technology can tell you these days if pearls are Natural. If your pearls are truly Natural Pearls they deserve respect and certification.
