we need to see a photo of the hallmark to provide an answer. How the letters E J appear to be written is vital.

Lawrence, providing number "9" in the gold hallmark is facing north-to-south, not east-to-west, the gold sovereign case, is comprised of 9 carat gold and not imported. Without seeing the birmingham hallmark, the date mark could be, 1811, 1861 (capital M), 1886 or 1911.
I'll have to get the guru team to do some more research on Birmingham makers marks around these dates. Please check back in a week.
