Hallmarked jewelry means it can be authenticated.

"Paste" stones and vintage costume jewelry set with rhinestones, often referred to as "paste" in Europe, are also valuable, even though they are not precious gemstones and rhinestone jewelry is much sought after by antique and vintage costume jewelry collectors.

If you have clear stones and want to know whether or not they are diamonds there are some simple tests that may help, although these tests work best for loose stones.

Draw a line on a sheet of white paper and place the stone, table down on the line. (The table is the top of the stone)
If the stone is a diamond you will not be able to see the line.

Another way to test to determine if the stones are sea-glass, rhinestones or Diamonds is the "breath test".

When you "huff" or breathe on the stone, if it fogs, this is an indication that the stones are Not diamonds.

And yes, I would recommend that you take the jewelry to your local jeweler, preferably one who handles antique jewelry for his opinion and appraisal.
