Musical Symbols & Hallmarks on Jewelry by: Anonymous
Hi Polly thanks for writing in.
Geeeeze........ you're asking a lot without a photo ;-)
OK. I think what you mean by "design" is the gold hallmark. Concerning the standard mark - this is the two digit number 18 carat ...... Gold jewellery/ jewelry is usually described in terms of caratage (karatage), which is an indication of its gold content, for example 18 carat or 18K. Alternatively, the gold content can be described in terms of "fineness", which is the gold content expressed in parts per thousand, for example 750 (which is 18 carat or 75.0% gold). There is some really good info about caratage on the World Gold Council.
About the trumpet inside a circle, that sounds like the sponsor mark and it's the symbol of the firm or individual who submitted the piece for marking. The problem is, there are quite a few musical instrument marks on jewelry, and these include horns, trumpets and all different shapes of bells, etc. so without the benefit of a photo we cannot tell.
You are welcome to submit a photo of the mark in a follow-up submission. Please type "Trumpet inside a Circle | Interesting Design on Signet Ring" so that I can merge with your original question here. There could be a wait and your patience is appreciated.
