Tiny Pearls Worth $1400?

I use to date a guy that traveled to China & Japan. He brought me home a set of pearls. It's in a red & black box with only a rose on the outside of the box. It contains an 18 inch necklace & 7 inch bracelet. The pearls are tiny and I think this is junk, but he once showed me an appraisal that said they were worth $1400.00. As cheap as he was, I find this hard to believe. The ex is many years ago & I want to get rid of this set. Can anyone help me?
