The maker is Johann Siegmund Kurz & Co, a famous silversmith from Hanau who began silversmithing in the 1870s. The symbol to which you refer was used through the 1960s. I've found this website to be very helpful: http://www.925-1000.com/Fgerman_marks_a1884_5.html

Swan Mark by: Anonymous
Hi Zoe, thank you for your question. Without seeing the marks on this piece it's impossible to identify. Because, not only must we be certain it is in fact a SWAN symbol and not a seagull or an eagle, etc. but the style of the letters and the stamp behind them are equally important, and without a photo we cannot see these.
What I can tell you is that a SWAN in an OVAL is a French mark used on foreign or unknown SILVER articles. Your silver heart shaped box embellished with cupids sounds beautiful and if it is a Swan in an oval, it could be a French hallmark.
