S in a box mark Snake Bracelet is NOT that of The Stieff Company by: Anonymous
The S in a box mark on JEWELRY is NOT the touchmark of THE STIEFF COMPANY. Stieff did not use that mark on any of the Sterling Silver and Gold jewelry that they made. Stieff used it on a few items from 1929 to 1954... but that was on solid sterling silver hollow wares... mostly goblets and cups. Never jewelry
Stieff also did NOT make SNAKE bracelets with spring hinges. About once a month someone sends me a picture of a snake bracelet with an "S in a box" mark and asks if it is Stieff Sterling Silver. Those items are never marked sterling silver.
Back in the 1990s I was a Jewelry and Accessories buyer, buying 18 to 20 Million pieces a year for a national retailer. I used to buy snake bracelets like the ones that people keep sending me pics of... and they had that same "S in a box mark". They were made in Hong Kong, are NOT marked with any metal purity and were sold across the world as cheap jewelry. A good look at the spring hinge will tell you that quickly.

Possibly STIEFF & CO by: Anonymous
There are a number of marks with a sideways letter S in a diamond shape on metal. All very similiar. The snake bracelet would most likely postion it within the time-frame of the art deco era so try:

Same Mark on Contemporary Piece by: BJO
I believe my piece to be Italian made (750) and it also has an S in a diamond mark which I assume to be the maker/designer. It is a ring with a modern flavor. Also would love an ID on the maker.

re: necklace by: Ashley
Thanks for helping me out with the research, but I need to ask if you would have any idea what-so-ever as to how much the necklace would be worth. Even just a ball park figure, that would be nice. Its just that nobody in Bendigo can even give me any information let alone a price. They keep saying they want to send it away for appraisal but I don't trust anyone to do that here in Bendigo. Thanks very much

pi, 750 and S mark by: Yvonne
Hi Ashley, the letter "pi", this is actually a letter from the Greek alphabet. Because the Cyrillic alphabet is based on the Greek alphabet, this letter is also found in the Russian language. However, it's most famous in mathematics, please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi
The number 750 is the Purity of the precious metal in your item. Since this is presumably Gold, then 750 means 750/1000 or 75% gold, commonly known as 18 carats. The remaining metal is usually Copper. This notation is practically universal and not unique to any particular region or country, although you are correct in that it is also used in Europe, but not exclusively.
The marks on the Glass or Crystal part of this piece would not be within our expertise however, the general theme may indicate Indian origin. Additionally, the various other decorative details on this lovely Necklace, for example the little fish and the manner that the chain has been braided, is also typical of Indian jewelry.
The "S in diamond" is a bit of a puzzle because, like you, we doubt that it is really the letter S since you'd normally see that on Sterling items. We have a feeling that it may be a character from the Gujarati dialect of the the Indian language, specifically that for the sound "D". Please visit: http://www.ukindia.com/zalph.htm to see if you agree.
Because we are looking at a drawing of this mark, we cannot be certain of this attribution. It's a bit like trying to confirm a suspect from a police sketch - a good start, but not very accurate. Therefore, if you believe otherwise as to what this character may be, please try to take a close up photo and send it to us in a follow-up submission for further research.
If your camera does not have a close-up setting, you may want to consider scanning it as best as possible.
As to its age, based on its style we would estimate that it was made ca 1920s - 1950s.
Thanks for writing in to us... best regards Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre www.antique-jewelry-investor.com

Hi Ashley - the S in a diamond , sounds like the maker's mark. Could you upload a photo, of the marks as close-up as possible, in a follow-up submission. Thanks.
