Images in Frames & Sheffield Crown by: Yvonne
Good Morning Anna
thank you for writing in.
S & D maker's mark is usually assosicated with Samsom & Davenport and seen on Silverplate/Electroplate from Sheffield, UK in the 1890s.
What is fascinating though, is that the crown image, (if the same crown) is also the Sheffield town mark UK on SILVER - it will appear in a distinctive frame. The crown image was used for 201 years in Sheffield from 1773-1974
Many countries design their hallmarks with distinctive frames. When marks are really worn away and the core image hard to see, the frame shape might be the only way to identify the marks.
Just as there are many variations of lion imagery there are many variations of crown imagery. This is why a picture of the marks in a hallmark determination is so important.
The frame or lack of, is a visual clue. Is the crown in a frame? Do you have any idea of the age of the ring?
