Ring with Indian Head stamp inside band

I have a gold ring with an Indian Head stamped on the inside. It is more than 100 years old as it was my grandmother's wedding ring. I took it to the jeweler and he was puzzled by the ring. It "behaved" like gold, but it didn't "feel" like gold. Do you know anything about this ring?
