Trying to determine value of Mikimoto choker necklace

by Beverly
(Tennessee)

My daughter received a Mikimoto necklace from her grandfather when she was a toddler over 15 years ago -- I think she wore it once and we just remembered it had been in our box -- We have the two boxes it came in and I was trying to determine the value...my issue is that I don't see anywhere a necklace this length. From end to end, it is 14" -- I can't see where Mikimoto may have done a shorter strand or maybe a children's line anywhere on the net. It has the gold clasp with the M on the clasp and 750m on the clasp. My daughter is wanting to sell but we have no idea what a good price would be. Any help you can give is appreciated.

Are these genuine Mikimotos and approximate value?

by Dave Kowalski
(Massachusetts)

These were left to me by my grandmother. An old flame got them for her as gift during thr Korean War. They are in a Red Box. The satin lined lid says K. Mikimoto, Inc. Pearl Island TOBA. They are 24" long with the largest pearl (7mm) at the center and getting smaller towards each end - each end in the 3-4mm range. The clasp hook says 14K with what looks like a shell in front of it. The larger part of the clasp is white gold. I can't distinguish any initials, etc on it. It has almost a zig-zag pattern on it that overlaps in the center. Any clues? Thank you!

Mikimoto clasp authenticity

I am considering buying a Mikimoto 4mm pearl necklace but am hesitating because the clasp is a simple "O ring" rather than the Mikimoto "signature clasp. THe "O ring" is 14K and does have an "M" in a clamshell on it though. Has MIkimoto ever used "O ring" clasps on its necklaces?

Mikimoto 16 inch strand

by Pam maguire
(Norman, ok)

I inherited a 16 inch strand of Mikimoto pearls from a family friend. Her husband have them to her in 1920's, the are in a green velvet Mikimoto box. The clasp is either silver or white gold, but when I had them re-strung the local jewlery store said they could not find a mark. There is a small pearl on the clasp. The store sold a different brand of pearls and they told me there was nothing special about Mikimoto nor the fact the pearls were so old. I am wondering if that is true as they were appraised at 800 in 1980 and this store told me they were not even worth that. Any insight you can offer is appreciated as I want to pass them down to my granddaughter but would like to know more.

Pearls handed down from aunt... Mikimoto?

by Jessica
(Atlanta, Ga)

this is the clasp, I cant make out the marking on it but it looks to be a seal

this is the clasp, I cant make out the marking on it but it looks to be a seal

My aunt has given me a pearl necklace with a mikimoto booklet stating that the pearls are genuine. The number in the book is HA10 and there are 93 pearls on the necklace. They were purchased in 1962. My aunt's Grandmother gave them to her and told her they were valuable.

I am curious to know what they are worth and if in fact they are genuine. The clasp appears to have a really tiny seal on it but I am unsure. On the back of the clasp are the numbers 835. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mikimoto Pearls from Saks

by Veronica
(Galveston, TX)

Stamp

Stamp

My husband purchased the pearls in 1998 from Saks Fifth Avenue in New Orleans. Recently while tooling around the Internet, I noticed several was trying to verify my pearls by the Guarantee Certificate, pouch, clasp, and stamps on the clasp. I have been unable to find a similar pouch, the clasp is a double sided bow, with only the hook of the clasp stamped "M" in a box (not an oyster) and "750". Also, my Guarantee Certificate has the size of the pearls 6.5mm x 7, what appears to be the Design Number "U700116K" and "02", no where does it have the Pearl Grade.

With this information is there anything you can tell me regarding the Mikimoto authenticity?

Difference between a Red Mikomoto box and a Blue one?

by Cathy
(Toronto, Canada)

Hi, I purchased a pair of Mikimoto pearl stud earrings through eBay. They didn't come with a receipt or grading certificate, but they did have a small Mikimoto gold and black tag attached with the Mikimoto name on one side and on the other side it says PES 705K 7 x 7.5 AAA. The posts are marked 750 and have the M in the clam shell.

The push backs say "MIKIMOTO" and 750. They also came in two red boxes, the outside cardboard box has the word Mikimoto written in gold on the outside, and the second red box, which holds the earrings, has gold Mikomoto lettering on the inside.

I thought most Mikomoto boxes were blue. Is there any difference from a Mikomoto pearl in a red box as compared to a blue box? Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find it on your site. Thanks!

Mikimoto 16" Necklace

My grandmother visited Lane Crawford in Hong Kong back in the early 70s and bought me a 16", individually knotted strand of Mikimoto pearls in a "Mikimoto Lane Crawford" case. They do have the signature clasp (silver) and the not-quite-white, pink-ish cast to them. It looks like they are about 5.5-6 mm....perfectly matched as best I can tell.

Now the question: I am going to give these pearls to my daughter and I would like to impress upon her how special these are. A-s-s-u-m-i-n-g this is an authentic Mikimoto necklace, what is likely to be the ballpark estimate of their value?

Again, this is just for her edification. Thank you. KMM

Mikimoto Clasp

Hello - My friend's Mikimoto pearl necklace was purchased in the 1990's and was recently stolen and sold to a local jewelry store.

We found the pearl strand at the jewelry store and we know that it is the necklace because the person who took them, told us where he took them.

I know the clasps have changed over the years - her clasp had the kind of figure 8 shape with the small pearl in the center in 14 kt gold. The store told some story about how the strand they had was purchased some 60 years ago and were her mother's pearls she was trying to sell. I believe the clasp was different back then, in maybe sterling instead of gold and a different shape.

Do you happen to know what the Mikimoto clasp might have looked like that long ago on a 5-6mm single stand of pearls? Thanks for any help on this.

Is there a difference between a strand of Mikimoto pearls bought in 1995 and one bought 60 years ago?

A relative sold my strand of pearls without permission. I went to the jewelry store that he sold them to and found them. The store clerk/owner said no; they had belonged to her mother and were 60 years old. The pearls are 20 inches, 6-5.5 mm pearls and have a yellow gold signature clasp. I have my original receipt from a Mikimoto authorized jewelry store. Is there a way to tell if these are her old pearls or my new pearls.

They really look fresh and have a beautiful luster to them and I do believe they are mine. I have an uneasy feeling about this store, but don't want to call police unless it can be proven the pearls are new. Would the clasp be the same in mine and a 70 year old necklace?

Are these genuine Mikimoto pearls?

by Victoria
(Norfolk, England)

I have been inherited a double string of pearls from my Mum always thought to be Mikimoto pearls. They are 6-7mm size, length 53cm from clasp end to end, 26cm when around the neck, with a silver clasp.

My Mum got them in the early 1960's as a gift, from the Peiping lace Store in Kuala Lumpur as is shown on the box, which states Genuine Mikimoto pearls. (of course I recognise it could just say that for effect!!) My parents lived in Malaysia at that time.

I would like some idea of whether they are genuine Mikimoto or something else and a rough value if possible! All thoughts welcome. Whatever happens they will remain with me as sentimental value is greater than any sales price.

Thank you.

Vintage Mikimoto pearls

by Mai Schaefer
(Texas)

Would you buy a vintage mikimoto Pearl necklace? It's from a jewelry store and they will provide an appraisal for it. They guaranteed it's authentic. I am paying 2500 for a 17 inch pearl necklace. I do not know the history of the pearls. I do not know the grade of the pearls but the jewelry store said they are AAA. I doubt they are AAA mikimotos since AAA are $$$$. It has the classic 18k gold clasp with the little seed pearl in the middle but does not have the "M" charm. Does anybody know when Mikimoto started putting the M charm on their strands?

What are the concerns of buying vintage pearls? I am not too familiar with pearls and really want these to last a long time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

Mikimoto Clasp?

I so appreciate the opportunity to ask my question, thank you!

I inherited a 24" pearl strand over a decade ago, it was in a silk or satin container with folding flaps marked Mikimoto Cultured Pearls Lane Crawford Hong Kong. The strand is marked 14k. I spent some time trying to research it but all I could come up with was that the clasp should be marked with an "M". This clasp is either not so marked or it has worn off, and I would drop my quest there were it not for the fact that a jewelry store told me the clasp was one of the most desired and offered me money for it. I am confused.

Would someone please look at the attached pictures and offer me an opinion? Thank you so very much!

Mikimoto Pink Pearl Strand - 1950's

by Pat
(Santa Barbara)

My mother recently told me about her Mikimoto Pearl strand and earrings. She isn't sure if they are real since the pearls look like toys. The pearls are very pink.

She received the pearl set as a gift from my father in the 50's. Dad was in Japan as an Army man when he courted Mom between 1951-1958. We as a family went back to Japan in the 70's.

Mom and Dad live in Florida now and I live in California, so, I haven't been able to do the tooth test or the drill hole test. I know Dad gave Mom several high quality pieces of jewelry every year and this set is one of them.

She told me the strand has the Mikimoto clasp. Can you tell me about the quality of the Pink Pearl? Did Mikimoto make strands of pink pearls? Is there a possibility these pearls are museum quality? How valuable are they?

I have no photo at this time and my Dad doesn't know how to take photos on his cell phone to send me.

mikimoto? silver clasp from Japan, military exchange, 1969?

I inherited a pearl double-strand necklace (18', 19") in a green velvet box -- inside the top of the box on silk lining is the word MIKIMOTO and underneath "CULTURED PEARLS" with the M in a shell mark above the word mikimoto.

The pearls are graduated 8mm to 4mm. The clasp is silver and the word "silver" is on the back of the clasp. There is s tiny M mark not on the back of the clasp but on the part of the clasp that snaps inside the outer part of the clasp (if that makes sense).
My grandfather bought my grandmother pearls in Japan (@1969-1970) while he was in the service (so presumably at a PX - military exchange). He also bought her a pearl ring which a jeweler identified as Mikimoto. The pearl ring is gold.

The same jeweler wasn't as sure about the necklace. Said the pearls were pink-toned, good lustre, round. He expected an "infinity" shape to the clasp, and thought the clasp should be gold. However he thought the M in the shell sign (see above) was close to the mark on the silk lining of the box (which we took to be the official Mikimoto trademark).

He thought the word "silver" on the back was odd, and it also seems odd that the ring is gold and necklace clasp silver (when they supposedly were bought at the same time). He wondered if perhaps there was a second line sold in Japan at the military exchanges. (He suggested insuring them for around $2,000-2500 -- when he looked closely, thought they were not "perfectly matched" -- and showed me one pearl that was "oblong" next to a round).
Any thoughts -- are these mikmoto pearls my grandfather bought my grandmother in 1969-1970? Were such mikimoto pearls sold in Japan then?

They are marked 14KT and have a lower case m within a circle hallmark. I need some help to try to identify my pearls as Mikimoto or not.

Hi Lorraine,
a visitor had a similar question about hallmark identification on a strand of cultured pearls. Is it a circle around the M or a clam shell around the M? You can read the question and see the Mikimoto hallmark here.

Value of My 22" Mikimoto Pearl Necklace

by JANE C. GRIFFIN
(NORTH CHARLESTON, SC 29420 U.S.A.)

My sister, who was an Army nurse during the Vietnam war, took a short vacation to Hong Kong during her tour of duty, which was from late 1967 through late 1969. I sent her $500 to buy me a string of Mikimoto pearls while she was in Hong Kong. My pearls are approximately 22 (twenty-two) inches long. The papers from Lane Crawford Ltd. guarantee that there are 58 (fifty-eight) pearls in the necklace, measuring 6-1/2MM (centre) to 6MM (end). They were purchased on 09/06/1969. There is a reference number (handwritten in ink) which appears to say "77HBL30." The booklet that came with the pearls gives the history of KOKICHI MIKIMOTO, "THE PEARL KING," 1858-1954. ON THE BACK OF THE BOOKLET is written: LANE CRAWFORD, P.O.BOX 83, HONG KONG, The Orient's Leading Jewellers Since 1850, and under that is listed the locations of Lane Crawford: Lane Crawford House, Hong Kong; Miramar Hotel Branch, Kowloon; Peninsula Hotel Branch, Kowloon; Naval Purchasing Branch, China Fleet Club, Gloucester Road, H.K."

I have the original satin fold-over envelope-style holder with an ivory clasp, and the booklet about Mikimoto is in perfect shape. I would like to sell these pearls and would like to know the value of them.

I also have a beautiful pair of pierced earrings which has one large pearl (I guess to be at least 7MM, perhaps even 8MM) to each earring, with three small diamonds set below the pearl on each earring. These earrings were hand-made by a Goldsmith at a very reputable Jewelry Store here in Charleston, SC, called GEISS Jewelers, on East Bay Street. They were made by a Mr. John Muller and were given to me as a Christmas gift in probably 1984-5. They go beautifully with the necklace. I do not know the origin of the pearls or the diamonds, but I can assure you that GEISS sells nothing but top-quality, expensive jewelry and Rolex watches, and has been in business in Charleston, SC, and Spartanburg, SC for many, many years. I would like to sell these also. (I do not have an appraisal on these earrings but can get one from GEISS if needed.)

I have not yet taken pictures of any of these items, but will do so at your request. Please send back to me a copy of this message.
Thank you kindly. JANE C. GRIFFIN

Mikimoto Pearls To Market

by theresa
(ontario, canada)

I have a set of Mikimoto pearls I think I used once. I would like to sell them and give the money to charity. I am trying to determine their "worth" and what I can realistically ask for them. I have the original outer boxes, inner boxes and tags. I live in Canada. Here's what I have:

A Mikimoto necklace:
with the original receipt bought in 1999 in the UK (Can $ value at time would have been around $3,000 -- 1,204 pounds sterling).

A Mikimoto bracelet:
(no receipt) that on the clasp has an "M" and "750" stamped. The tag says "PEG-752K " and below "71/2 - 8 A+".

Earrings:
were bought later -- maybe around 2000 or so and the tag says "PES 752K" and below "7.5X8MM A+".

Would like to know what the markings mean and what value they could fetch in today's market.
THANKS,
Theresa

Mikimoto 7 Strand Bracelet

by philip smith
(pierson, FL)

I have a vintage 18k gold Mikimoto seven strand 8 1/2" bracelet with 6mm pearls. It has an unusual clasp that slide sideways to lock in place. It has the Mikimoto hallmark and is stamped 18k. It came out of a wealthy Miami estate. I bought this and several gold items. I can't find anything close to it on the internet. I think its circa 1920-1930s. Any idea what I have?

The clasp has the shell with the M in the middle it is sterling silver and I beleive my Father purchased them in Japan or Korea in the early 50's. How can I tell if they are faux or the real thing. I don't have the orignal box they came in. Thank you for your assistance.

Mikimoto Ratings and Clasps

Hi, does Mikimoto have different style clasps for their pearls? Is that one way I could identify an A1 pearl grading from a AAA?

Thanks

Mikimoto Clasps

by cornelia
(alabama)

How long has the current "signature" Mikimoto clasp been in use? I refer to the 18k yellow gold clasp that is a swirled figure 8 in design with a small pearl centered on it.

MikiMoto Cultured Pearls

My pearls were restrung and they replaced the Mikimoto clasp - they included it when they returned it but I have lost it. I still have the certificate and original box they came in. Are they no longer valuable?

Valuation Mikimoto Necklace 1997

by Hazuki
(Houston, TX USA)

Hello there!

I am looking at getting a valuation on a Mikimoto pear necklace purchased in the Ginza store in Tokyo 1997 for me by my mother. Knowing her, they would probably be graded A or A+, and I know they would have cost somewhere between $1200 to $1500 USD originally. They have been in my possession from the time of purchase until now, and I have the original box, cleaning cloth, and everything.

Unfortunately, I am not the type of person to ever wear pearls so I am looking at selling them in order to buy something more to my tastes. So an insurance valuation and a re-sale valuation would be just wonderful!

Thank you sooo very much!
Hazuki

Light Pink Mikimoto Pearl Necklace Question

by Mary-Jo
(Austin, Texas USA)

I was given a stand of 1947 Mikimoto pearls from my grandmother. My father purchased them at Mikimoto when Japan. They are a light pink luster, cultured, graduated 5-7mm, clasp is white gold with a tiny pearl on it, never restrung yet in remarkably beautiful condition. The box it came in is a light gray with gold outline. I would like to know what to insure them for.
