The diamond is one of the most sought-after gemstones. The name comes from the ancient Greek word - adámas, which means "unalterable".
It's no small wonder that De Beers coined the famous phrase - Diamonds Are Forever , the title of Ian Fleming's novel, of 1956, and of which the spy film (1971), the seventh in the James Bond series, took the same name. In the film, Bond impersonates a diamond smuggler to infiltrate a diamond smuggling ring, and uncovers a plot to build a giant laser satellite that would be used to hold the world for ransom.
The original round brilliant-cut was developed by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919. The modern round brilliant consists of 58 facets (or 57 if the culet is excluded), today usually cut in two pyramids placed base to base. If cut to ideal proportions the white light will return to the eye, maximizing light return and insuring the brilliant cut stone to look "brilliant".
It would appear, (from photo, sorry but not very clear), that the setting along the shoulders of the ring is a CHANNEL setting.
This style of setting in a finger ring secures a single row of gemstones, of identical size within two circular bands, bridged together in such a way as to secure the stones between them.
Probably the center diamond is BRILLIANT cut, (see above).
PT and the color of the metal being white, means it's made of PLATINUM. A heavy white metal with a grayish caste. Platinum is a very hard metal and more expensive than gold.
I think I can make out (from the photo) two yellow gold bands on either side of the girdle, the 18 would indicate then 18 yellow carat gold.
It is a lovely ring, however, this ring is NOT an antique diamond engagement ring.
Platinum metal, brilliant cut diamonds, and chanel settings are modern developments in the history of jewelry, and its clear from the design elements in this diamond engagement ring that the designer was making sure they were all present.
However before you consider scrapping it, please contact me, I have a friend who may be interested in buying it. You can contact me using contact form on Navigation bar.
