Qualified Appraisers in India by: Anonymous
Hi Sam
there definitely seems to be a qualified appraiser vacuum in India! And it shouldn't be like this, especially considering the recent increase of diamond cutters and site-holders in India.
Have you tried Gem Palace Sam? Since 1947 when India became a republic Gem Palace started acquiring jewelry made by their family through various generations.
If anyone would be able to appraise an antique gold trading necklace from Jaipur, as important as the one you have acquired, it would beGEM PALACE in Jaipur. If they do not appraise jewelry, they might be able to refer you to a qualified appraiser in India.
Also you could try GIA in India. They also should be able to point you in the right direction.
Are yo able to upload a photo of the gold necklace Sam?
I hope the above links might help. Let us know how you get on.
best, Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre

Awaiting your Response by: Anonymous
Dear Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre,
I am eagerly waiting your response on the details of organizing for a qualified expert to appraise the piece. I would highly appreciate your help in this as I have been contacted by one of the dealer who is ready to offer me USD $ 250,000 for this piece without the appraisal and I believe that it is worth more than the offered value.
I want to get an insurance done for the same at the earliest. I am also planning to visit New Delhi, India next week and if you know someone there I can have the piece examined there also.
Thanks,
Sam

RE: Ancient Contemporary Jewelry by: Sam
Dear Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre,
Thank you very much for your comments, Highly appreciated the details being provided by you.
Let me give you a description of what I have in regards to the "Ancient Contemporary Jewelry".
This piece of Ancient Contemporary Jewelry is a nine strands gold necklace being worn by traders in the mid 17th Century in Jaipur, India. It is a very rare 25 inches long and is weighing about 700 gms. Out of the Nine Strands, we are left over with just five strands and believe that the rest of four strands were either being sold or broken during their time.
The necklace do not contain any Gem stones. its a pentagon shape beads and the strings are the crossing gold strings passing through each beads.
I checked on the qualified jewelry appraiser specializing in early antique jewelry, for the appraisal of this piece, but found out that there is none in India.
Kindly provide your comments on the same as I am looking for the appraisal of this antique jewelry.
Thanks,
Best Regards,
Sam

Ancient Contemporary Jewelry by: Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
Hi Sam - great question! At what point does Antique Jewelry become Ancient Jewelry and how do we then value it?
When people talk about "antique jewelry" they're usually referring to period style antique jewelry like georgian, art nouveau, victorian, and jewelry made in the art deco periods.
However, in the history of jewelry "antique jewelry" within the above periods is, in fact, quite contemporary.
Beyond those time-periods we arrive at contemporary ancient jewelry and another store of value, that very possible could be of far greater value than the "antique Jewelry" store of value in which the gold composition played a major role.
In contemporary ancient jewelry, other factors such as age, rarity, desirability, forms and techniques used, provenance (where the jewelry comes from), become more important and hence more valuable than the composition of gold, the further back into the history of jewelry we go.
For example, an ancient contemporary brass diadem could be worth many thousands of dollars. In very early jewelry, like Ancient Egyptian Jewelry, in certain Ancient Egyptian dynasties, "glass" was prized above gemstones and many ancient Egyptian necklaces you see in the museums today, contain glass stones.
Does the jewelry you refer too include gemstones Sam? Early cut stones may not impress Mr De Beers very much, but they can certainly raise the eyebrows of jewelry and gemstone collectors.
Basically, there are lots of variables and considerations that go into appraising antique jewelry and earlier ancient contemporary jewelry.
Don't go down to your local manufacturing jeweler for an appraisal for early antique jewelry. A qualified jewelry appraiser specializing in early antique jewelry will need to see this piece. We may be able to point you in the right direction, depending on your location.
