Portugal
by: HRI

While I have somehow landed on this site by accident, I do not see an answer to your question. So if still needed, I offer you the following...

Your hallmarks are from Portugal and used from 1938 until 1984. The ant mark indicates that the item is of white gold with a minimum fineness of 800/1000 or 19.2kt gold.

The rectangular outline indicates it was hallmarked in Porto. The center mark is a classic Portuguese maker's mark, very ornate and generally larger than the hallmarks. The final mark on the right, a rooster's head facing right, is a mark that allows the maker to hallmark the item before it is completely finished. It designates that the material stamped is destined to be finished as a jewelry item.

Portugal has a fascinating methodology to their hallmarks that is worth reading more about.

Hope that helps,
Danusia

Continental

I am not an expert or anything, but I think if the hallmarks appear on the outside of the band, it means the ring is of Continental origin. Also Platinum is a relatively newcomer...

Similar Ring
by: Anonymous

I have a ring with similar hallmarks. The one the that resembles an ant and the top one are the same; however, it's the one in the middle that differs. I was wondering if you could offer some advice to what that may mean. It's got a small diamond in it, and I'm afraid I don't have a back story. I found it at work, buried in the ground.

Hi Anna

could you please attach three photos and send to the following email address:
yvonnehammoudaATmacDOTcom

  • One photo should be the actual marks
  • The second that of the entire item, and
  • The third that of a larger area surrounding the mark

Also any information in relation to the following:

    1. When and how acquired, for example: inherited from grandma 10 years ago when she was in her 80s  OR  purchased at a Flea Market or Auction 6 years ago  OR  picked it up at a Garage Sale from a French family 2 years ago etc

    2. Any related family history that may help in focusing our research to a particular Period or Region, for example: I remember seeing it at my grandma's house since I was a little child while still in Virginia  OR  my grandma brought it with her from Germany in the 1950s  OR  my husband found it at a Flea Market in Oregon 20 years ago etc

    3. Any other information you may have already discovered and any other details that will help.

    with regards
