Pearls of Best Value ?

Hello

I am going to buy some pearls for my wife.
What would you suggest would be the best value for the money. In brand name or type of pearls ? Where would you suggest buying them as well. Local jewelry stores seem to not be very well educated on pearls so far, unfortunately.

My budget is 1500-2000 $ and i would like to buy an 18" string. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
