Researching Birmingham Date Letters
by: Anonymous

Hi Amanda the TM & Co mark are the sponsor's mark THOMAS MILLWARD & Co. The mark was mostly used on smoking accessories & regalia, Birmingham, UK ca 1860s - 1930s

OK. so we've narrowed our search down to a date between 1860 to 1930.

If you go look under "Researching British Hallmarks" in the Jewelry Resources then go to Birmingham Date letters, match the letter "t" with the date letter there. Let me know how you get on.

TM & Co
by: Anonymous

I sent my question yesterday and had a couple of question marks on some marks. I have since found that the markings on the gold band ring are T.M & Co (O is high with dot under it) crown 22 anchor (on its side) then a lower case t.

I have looked at the markings and think it could be the London 1874 or 1934. Can you please let me know if T.M & Co relates to either of these and if not point me in the right direction. Regards Amanda

Researching British Hallmarks
by: Anonymous

Hi Amanda

these are British Halllmarks.

the T?M & Co is the sponsor's mark.

On gold, a crown plus the karat (spelled with a ?c? in Britain, abbreviated ?c? or ?ct?) was used from 1798 until 1975 (22 ct was marked the same as sterling silver until 1844). In Scotland, a thistle was used instead of the crown. It is high carat gold, 22K, 22ct or 916 (parts per 1000) or 91.6% gold.

The anchor is the Birmingham assay office where the piece was submitted for assay and the letter following the assay mark, will tell the the year. This letter is the date letter.

Go to Researching British Hallmarks and you will see the link to the Birmingham date letters and maker's mark.

Examine the marks under a jewelers loupe or strong magnification and try and match the letters, and the shields around the letters, with the letters & marks in charts in the British Hallmark links.
