old string stuck in pearls

Hi, I am restringing some pearls and there's string still in the pearls. I am hoping that you have a tip for getting it out safely. I cannot get it out with a needle, I have tried tweezers. I am soaking them in water now. These pearls are tiny, 2 to 3mm. Can you please help?
