Old Miners Cut Diamond Ring

This ring was left to my wife by her mother. We were told that it is a very old miners cut diamond. It is set in 18k gold and measures approx. 7-32 inches. My wife wants to have the diamond set in a different setting because this one is too small and was advised not to because it is a miners cut. Any comments about this ring would be appreciated.
