Hi thanks for your comments. Lots of people assume that platinum is the hardest precious metal. But that's not true. Although platinum is about two times harder than gold, it is still a relatively soft metal that can be shaped fairly easily. Perhaps the misconception that platinum is very hard has arisen because people confuse tarnish-resistance with hardness. Platinum is extremely tarnish-resistant, yes. But is it Not especially hard. Because it resists tarnishing explains why it can be plated onto silver as silver does tarnish easily. In an effort to create silver jewelry that retains its bright surface sheen. But that has nothing to do with hardness.

It's a little magnetic by: Anonymous
It is slightly magnetic: pure silver is not if has an hardening alloy of either iron cobalt or nickel, those are the only magnetic metals.
To answer if silver or platinum, my inclination is platinum with cobalt as those two are commonly added to each other with silver. It's typically copper they use to harden would be none magnetic there is some silver made with nickel but that's rare...
i have one myself & my deduction and from knowledge is that it's most likely platinum mixed with cobalt. They mix metals in jewelry to harden it.

Old cross italy engraved back by: Craig Bunton
Hello I happen to have the same piece of jewelry the old crucifix with "Italy" engraved on the back and the only other markings that I have been able to find is the INRI above Jesus' head. I can't remember if it was my grandmother or exactly who it was that gave this to me as I have had it and worn it for the last thirty years if any of you find out anymore details please post your findings.

I found the same piece! Italy Cross Pendant by: Julie W
My 90-year-old grandmother just passed away and I found the exact same piece at her house. It’s only stamped with Italy and the tarnish came right off when I put it in the silver cleaning solution. Please let me know what you found out. I’m so curious if I’ve found an old piece that may have belonged to one of my great grandparents!! What a treasure that would be!

I.N.R.I Meaning by: Anonymous
I.N.R.I. are the most common letters appearing (on pictures) - the letters are an abbreviation of the Latin Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudorum, meaning "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews". A variation of this is I.N.R.J., Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Judorum (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). Cheers!

Re: Crucifixion Pendant Italy Response by: Loana
Wow, thank you for the great information!
The pendant is fairly heavy, so I'm thinking it may be platinum as you described, but there are no numbers marked on the back.
I will take it to a jeweler as you recommended, I never thought of doing that! :~)
Not sure if you can tell, but it has the classic INRI engraved down the top above His head, giving more to adore!
I'm sad to have to sell this cross on Ebay, but first I want to find out all I can about it so it can be shared and passed on.
Thanks again for your help. Such a wonderful website!

Crucifixion Pendant Italy by: Anonymous
Hi Loanna Collecting antique and vintage jewelry is the most sustainable way of consuming fashion - it's the perfect example of recycling.
Great to see you are using a jewelers loupe and examining the item under magnification. Are there any numbers anywhere on the cross? Numbers are usually used to signify the gold purity. If it was the white metal "Platinum" the pendant would feel quite heavy in the hand compared to silver. Platinum is very hard precious metal and has a gray caste compared to white gold. Your local jeweler will be able to test this metal for you.
If it is marked "ITALY" it means the piece was made in Italy. And with Italy being the home of the Roman Catholic Church - the design being the crucification of Jesus is definitely in keeping with the Roman Catholic Church, and the 'Adoration of the Cross'.
