If I'm understanding what I've studied correctly, the fact that it's set in gold (not brass, copper, silver) makes it more "modern," as well as the shape of her nose (more cute and buttonlike, instead of straight and thin or Roman)
Because it could be newer, to make sure it's NOT plastic, tap her face on your teeth. Should feel and click like stone, not dull like plastic. Or, heat a needle to red hot and press into stone on back side.
If material melts, it's plastic. If needle collapses, it's real...made from shell, agate, et cetera. Also, when flipped over, real will be curved on the back; plastic will be flat. An old timey c-clasp for the pin without the spinning piece that closes over it is a good indication of being very old. But my understanding of value with cameos is not the age but its rarity.
And I also understand that left-facing are more costly and desirable. But I can't find a clearly defined explanation of whose left? Lol
