Possibly Shakespearean Actor
by: Anonymous

Good Morning,

Dale, thank your for writing in and uploading images of your bracelet. Cameo Jewelry, lava carved in Italy, souvenirs from Italy, were popular in Victorian times. The carving is beautiful. I don't think it is a Greek subject though, mainly because of the "ruff" he's wearing around his neck, in one of the cameo.

William Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, (16th century) but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the 19th century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare's genius, and the Victorians worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called "bardolatry".

When Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, the story was likely an influence on the Italian writers and artists, who the playwright was greatly indebted to. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Shakespeare

Throughout the 19th century there was a master roll of legendary actors' names and by the end of the century Shakespeare's plays had been established as part of the repertory outside of Great Britain: not only in the United States but in many European countries.

Comparing cameos that we can see, hair style, beard, mustache and facial features, it appears to be the same male face and shoulders, on each individual cameo, but in different costume.

In one cameo, male is wearing, what's called a "ruff" which is an item of clothing worn in Western Europe from the mid-sixteenth century to the mid-seventeenth century - in Shakespeare's time.

I'm leaning towards a commemorative bracelet, a male Shakespearean actor and an enterprising Italian carver sensing the romantic mood of the times. Italian cameo artists also set up shop in England, France and America in the 1800s. These cameo craftsmen carved cameos in the ancient greek mythological style or any other design the purchaser might select.

Warm Wishes,
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
