mother of pearl necklace with large pendant

My uncle was a missionary in China for thirty some years. When he returned to the USA in the 1950's he brought several items with him one of which is this lovely necklace. From all accounts it is mother of pearl. There is a large oval hanging pendant and the rest are smaller ones connected by silver links. Each oval has a home scene with Chinese people carved into it...both sides. Are you able to tell me anything about such a piece existing that many years ago? Thanks!
