great to know the Mikimoto label has inspired you to take your pearls out and wear them tonight! Mikimoto perfected the culturing of pearls and has never manufactured faux pearls, G-d forbid! Sorry for this confusion. Was connecting the similar design of the pearl necklace and not the genre of pearl. The pioneer of culturing pearls was, in fact, a British ex-pat, Mr William Saville-Kent who cultivated a pearl in the waters around Thursday Island which lies off the north coast of Queensland in Australia.
Jackie Kennedy's triple strand pearl necklace might have been faux pearls which are pearl imitations but they sold at Sotheby's for the high price (estimate at auction was $500-$700) of $211,500!
Considering the profit margin on this faux pearl necklace and also considering the provenance will organizations like Sothebys with 90 locations in 40 countries some day consider investing a portion of these profits back into communities to alleviate youth homelessness in Australia and the USA?
The buyer was the Franklin Mint. The Franklin Mint retains this necklace on display even today I believe.

Wow! Thank you so much, learned something new concerning Mikimoto. didn't realize he made imitation pearl necklaces. But at least this confirms the big price differences that I have found when it comes to pearls. I think I'll wear it now.

Your beautiful triple strand of pearls are indeed authentic Mikimoto Cultured Pearls and in the original box! They appear to be in superb condition looking at this photo. The signature on the clasp being M in a clamshell is definitive.
Triple strand pearl necklaces were at the height of pearl fashion in the 1960s. Please see the famous photo of Jackie Kennedy wearing her signature triple strand of pearls and JFK Jr playing with them. This particular pearl necklace was made from imitation pearls.
