Mikimoto Pearls 1949 - 19 inch strand by: Anonymous
Depends on the condition, the size of the pearls, the length and if the clasp has the Mimkimoto stamp. Some of the Mikimoto strands do not have a stamp on the clasp although authentic. Do you have any receipt or proof of purchase. Is it still in box?
When my sister married, her husband gave her his grandmother's Mikimoto pearls purchased in Kyoto, Japan in 1949. The strand measured 19 inches long. These pearls had been restrung and knotted. The clasp is sterling silver. It has a few pearls in the middle although there is no Mikimoto mark. The box is red and says K., Mikimoto, inc. It also says Ginza Tokyo. The pearls are graduating with the largest pearl in the center.
Recently she went to Antiques Roadshow and the appraiser told her that they were worth less than $100. He said that they are not perfectly round and that they have some imperfections. My sister's mother in law was shocked. She says that her father paid $300 for them in 1949!! This may not be an accurate figure though.
Now I wonder if they are Mikimoto Pearls at all? Maybe my sister's husband's grandfather got ripped off. Any insight from anyone?
