In a social context, in days gone by, spectacles were viewed as a label of a keen intellect and many an 18th century man purchased and wore spectacles who could not read a single letter on a page! The spectacle though created an illusion of rank. Oh the vanity of the 18th century mere male!
Yes indeed, we also think Medical Antiques, that a small collection of spectacles that illustrates the evolution of eye glasses would make a fascinating display for the ophthalmic profession!
Now to the Leopard mark stamped on the metal rim of these interesting antique spectacles. I am thinking it's probably a Leopard's Face; one of the big cat's, the LEOPARD's face is the UK - LONDON Town mark (Uncrowned Leopard Head) ca 1822 - Present.
