Key Engraved on an Antique Ring

I have an antique dress ring which was my great grandmothers. It is 15c gold with an opal and it is over 90 years old. On the inside of the band, next to where it says 15c, there is a rectangle indent with a key inside it. Can you please tell me what the key means? Thank you.
