JD Initials & Town Mark Help by: Anonymous
Hi Beckie!
British hallmarks usually have a minimum of three marks, which your piece has. James Dempster was a Scottish maker with initial marks JD similar to what you describe, but because the other marks are not scottish, I'm thinking it may be of European origin. Perhaps made for export although there is not mention of export mark in your post.
DIESSENHOFFEN, SWITZERLAND, Town Mark - ca 1706 - 1720s had townmarks similar to the mark you describe but I would date this piece, from your description, to be 19th century.
DOKKUM, NETHERLANDS Town Mark - ca early 19thC similar but without a photo to compare cannot be sure.
It sounds beautiful, lucky you. If you ever get a chance to photograph I am sure our visitors would really enjoy seeing this brooch in the Favorite Jewelry Forum and we could also investigate the marks further.
Hi On the back of the brooch the JD is plain and theres is no dot as for the cirle its a plain line cirle with the star/mullett at the top of the circle. I m sorry I cant put photo on as no camera. thank again beckie

JD Initials by: Anonymous
Beckie thanks for your question. Your bird-in-flight gold brooch sounds beautiful and from your description would appear to be from the Victorian era.
Have you tried examining the jewelry marks with a Jewelers Loupe to determine if it is a star in circle or a crescent/sickle on the back?
About the initial marks JD on the back, can you provide more info as there are quite a few initial marks with those same letters.
Are the initials JD in a cartouche? What is the shape of the cartouche?
Are the letters JD fancy looking? Is there a dot between them? I know not everyone can attach a photo but IF you are able too it will help, (you can upload a photo in a follow-up submission, please use "JD Initials" in the subject heading) if no please could you assist us by providing answers to the above questions about the initials, if you can.
