Hi! I'm looking for the maker with four arrows, the head parts like greater/lesser than symbols and 14k ITALY below them. The ring also say, MOD DEP in capital letters. It has a man and woman on either side of the ring supporting the stone at the top of the ring. Mine had a 3D piece of brushed gold rather than a stone.

What is this marking? by: Anonymous
I have a pair of earrings marked "750" and "*1784AL". I used an asterisk in front of the 17, but it should be a star. I know the "750" means 18k, but what does the other markings mean? Thank you

Italian hallmarking by: Jane
Italian hallmark- star, number, and 2 letters. This indicates the "Star of Italy, number is the company and the 2 letters indicate the province the company is located. Gold sold in Italy must be 18K,(750). Less than by law, is exported.

Antique Italian Hallmarks used Variations by: Anonymous
Between 1872 to 1933 - ANTIQUE Italian hallmarks can display variations of the common control marks. Maker's marks varied, initials, full name, symbols and COMBINATIONS were used, which might have included city names and addresses. Italian pieces of this period may have a maker's mark but no standard mark. It could be an Italian maker's mark.

Dear anonymous, We try to keep the forum a free service but depending on the volume of submissions. there can be a quite a wait.
An alternative, and to speed things up, you might "throw a sprat to catch a mackerel" and consider paying for an expert opinion or expert valuation which is a separate service.

Italian Hallmarks from 1872 by: Anonymous
Hello Fiona thank you for your question about Italian hallmarks. Before 1870 Italy was a diverse group of kingdoms, duchies and city states. The land was ruled in absentia by France, Austria, Spain and the Vatican.
The marks on metals up until 1872 were as diverse and as complex as the politics and the power struggles of the ruling classes. In that year, 1872, the new nation instituted a loose but fully national hallmarking system.
