There are many ways gold can be marked usually depending on where it was made. Here is a link which shows demonstrates UK hallmarks including showing that 585 means 14K gold.The higher the number the more gold content. I believe that 585 means the gold content is 58.5 gold. http://www.assayoffice.co.uk/our-services/uk-hallmarks American Marks are often 9K, 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, 24K etc referring to the karat of gold...the higher the number the more gold content. I believe the other marks, such as star, additional number or initials are makers marks. They may be specifically Italian makers marks.
