916 standard mark on archeological revival jewelry by: Anonymous
Hi Mike thank you for the following jewelry question:
"Teardrop clover with Emeralds and ruby pendant Hollow design 3 dimensional 2.5 inches x 2.5 inches "
Mike how beautiful! Concerning the marking 916 -
High carat gold - 22K, 22ct or 916 (parts per 1000) or 91.6% gold is mainly used in Asia and the Middle East. It is soft and very yellow like you can see in the photo of this lovely brooch.
This brooch appears to be in the style of Archeological Revival Jewelry. It reminds me of merovingian jewelry.
Merovingian jewelry was made during the dynasty of the early Frankish kings from c481 to c. 751 (after which period under Charlemagne, the custom of burying objects with the deceased was discontinued) found throughput Europe, but mainly in Belgium and the Rhineland. It is also called Frankish Jewelry and also Teutonic Jewelry.
It is characterized by cloisonne inlays of colored gemstones and animal and bird motif.
