Three Graces, Antique Cameo & "Women" by: Anonymous
Hi Zoe thanks for writing in. Without seeing an image of the cameo, unfortunately I can't evaluate if the cameo material is stone such as agate, conch shell or some other type of composite material.
Basically speaking a "real" cameo will possess an undeniable sense of "quality".
I prefer cameo against a silver background, I think it tends to let the carving do the talking. And these three graceful maidens have something to talk about and have been the subject of much discussion themselves, and even "adoration" for over a thousand of years in the history of art, this portrayal of "women" has been one of the most captivating of all the subjects on cameo art.
The Three Graces (artist unknown) is a marble, and presently resides in the Louvre Museum, Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, Sully, ground floor, Rm 17. It is 3 ft, 10 3/4 inches high by 33 1/4 inches wide.
Your cameo is a cameo carving of the Three Graces that you see in the above image.
Three Graces, represent Beauty, Mirth and Good Cheer. In Greek mythology, they are the daughters of Zeus. In this cameo, the Graces are standing together as they usually do in all classical references.
