I also have a silver item (brooch) with a mini plaque stating "STERLING SILVER K&L" or the latter could be K&I.

Italian Sterling Marks by: Anonymous
Hi Nic
Sterling silver jewelry is highly collectible. Sterling Silver develops a lovely patina that is unmistakable with age.
The most common mark used on sterling silver jewelry are the numbers 925 - this is also the most common marked used on silver jewelry made in the USA.
The mark can be anywhere on the piece and the lettering can be very small. Small 925 marks can be found on all types of jewelry and findings, from the post of earrings, on clasps, on the inside of the bale of a necklace and on bracelet links and clasps. Sometimes a loupe is necessary to see the marking clearly.
The 925 mark can often be seen alone or used in conjunction with the word "sterling" as in "sterling 925". Italian silver is often marked Italy 925.
