Pearls from China sounds about right as China supplies about 95% of the worlds output of pearls. (says the Gem & jewelry Association of China -2007)

Production rapidly increased through the 1900s - 2000s. Around the time your pearls were bought from China! They will either be Chinese Freshwater pearls or Chinese Cultured Pearls.

How long is the strand? What are the size of the pearls, you need to measure the diameter? Examine the clasp. Is it high quality? This usually gives you an idea about the quality of the pearls. (not always though)
