I think you have your dates wrong. Do you mean they've been in your family since the 20th century not 19th as Cultured Pearls which are pearls which have a bead nucleus; the bead has been implanted by man, have only been around since the late 20th century. Thanks to Kokichi Mikimoto.

There is a claim that William Saville-Kent, an English expat liivng on Thursday Island beat Mikimoto at culturing the pearl, and the claim could probably be true - (the exact dates are on this page) but Mikimoto's marketing genius took pearls out of the realm of dreams to adorn the bodies of the average woman on earth. Pearls were now affordable.
