Thank you for the comments, the examples of Harry Aitkin I have seen seem to have an intervening dot - rather than separate letters, but you may well be right. Regarding the date, I have already looked at as many charts as I could, and cannot find a match to my satisfaction - Not sure if for gold the shape of the stamp is significant, if it is I'm torn between 1848 & 1899, otherwise 1823 might be better... ... have since found that the shape is NOT consistant, and I had missed the significance of the duty stamp which under a lens looks like Victoria so is 1837-1890 pointing toward 1848.

Concerning the date - click on the Researching British Hallmarks then click on Birmingham Date Letters. Then click on the date letter chart in the top right hand corner of the page.
Now examine your ring and compare the date letter which is normally the last letter in the sequence with the date letters in the Birmingham date letter chart. The outline of the cartouche around the letter should also match.
