the metal looks electroplated, but it could just be the photo. If the gold surround has been electroplated the entire surround is made of base metal and a very thin coating of gold is applied. The electroplating process was first used in the 1840s. Because the coating if gold is thin, wear points are easy to detect on an old piece.

Can you give me some more information on the actual marks themselves. Closely examine the maker's marks with your jewelers loupe or magnifying glass with 10 x magnification and determine what the symbol actually is. Is it a fancy letter H or are they two crescent moons back to back? It's hard to work out from this side.
