18KP is nothing to sneeze at!
by: Tom

I recently sold an item on Ebay for $8000 that was marked 18KP. I missed the "P" and its significance completely. The item had to be authenticated by Ebay's authenticator because the selling price was over $2500. Surprise, surprise! The GIA authenticator canceled the transaction because I had described the metal of the item as 18K and that was incorrect. I was shocked because the Italian jewelry designer is world famous and who knew that they cut corners! When I insisted on knowing the exact reason for the violation, I was told that the item's metal is 18K and PLATINUM! (How silly -- they cancelled the sale even though it was the buyer who would have benefited). Anyway, 18KP could mean the presence of platinum as much as 19K, ..... Learn something every day.

Doesn’t Kp also mean gold plated?

KP Gold Mark - Introduced in 1978
by: Anna

Hi Jenny - 18kp means the gold is guaranteed by the manufacturer to be not less than 18k. The karat mark followed by a P was introduced in the United States in 1978, so any jewelry with this mark is not antique jewelry.

kind regards
Anna

"P" stand for Plumb
by: Yvonne

The P stands for "plumb" - or exact - which means that the gold is exactly 18k with no tolerance (not under-karated). It's exactly 18K, not 17, or 19, but 18 on the nose!
This also means that the ring was made after 1976, when the U.S. National Stamping Act was amended and this
mark was introduced.
