Bronwen: I can't find your article. Can you send? by: Jane
I'm searching for Bronwen's ariticle on Egyptian and Russian hallmarks. I'm trying to figure out some Egyptian hallmarks on a piece I have that looks like the Egyptian Scarab spider legs/flower petals broach, but has a jewel in the center instead of a scarab. How can we find the hallmark guide you've written?

Egyptian & Russian hallmarks by: Bronwen
These look like perfectly ordinary Egyptian hallmarks. I have put everything I know about those into a guide:
I got interested in Egyptian jewelry more broadly after acquiring a pair of earrings with what turned out to be synthetic color change sapphires (often sold as synthetic alexandrite) & Egyptian hallmarks. The Soviet Union was the producer of these stones & also made jewelry with them, so I have seen many examples of Soviet work while looking for pieces to go with the earrings.
The USSR marked their jewelry profusely & conspicuously, using the European numeric system to indicate gold content, along with an assortment of symbols such as a star & a worker's head.
While I have heard of pieces deliberately being marked as of lesser content than actual, to make it easier to get these items out of the country, I have never heard of their resorting to using Egyptian marks.
