I would have been very interested if the gold makers mark JW had been identified. I have a 18K gold and black enamel mourning ring with a London leopard mark, profile stamp of Queen Victoria...date mark is worn off....but, I would like to know who JW, the maker was.

Hi Jamie thanks for writing in with the following hallmark question:
"i have a gold ring with an eagle engraved in a black with red speckle coat of arms, it has a crown, 18, cat face, a and a j.w hallmark"
OK Jamie. The cat face is the UK London Town Mark. If the leopard's head is in a rectangle it will dated ca. 1822 - present.
The gold standard is 18 carat gold or 750 (parts per 1000) or 75% gold. The j.w will be the maker's mark. The letter "a" will be the date letter mark.
To find out the exact year you need to check the date letter and the maker's mark against the mark's and date charts as the marks and the lozenge behind the marks all have to match exactly with the London date letter chart and the London maker's mark.
