Gold over Hallmarks
by: Anonymous

Hi Audrey thank you for writing in with the following hallmark question:

"Recently repaired, as the horse feet had come off the filigree.
The 'jeweller' took the stone out & when resetting it covered the hallmark with gold! I had taken some pics prior to his "fixing" job. I would appreciate any info on the now lost history. Has it devalued the piece?"

Audrey, I really feel your pain. No, not a good repair. If you no longer can see the hallmarks, then yes it would affect the value. A Beautiful piece and as you have a photo of the marks, most people interested in this piece wouldn't be too bothered. Good thing you took a photo of the mark beforehand.

OK. The marks J.R look like the mark used by -
JOHN ROSS (Accessories for Leather Goods, UK) - ca 1890s

If you ever decide to part with it, I may know a buyer. Please contact me privately.

best wishes,
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
