Scratch Test for Gold
by: Yvonne

Morning Kim

Bangle could be lined gold meaning its not solid gold. So would test gold by making a very small scratch mark deep enough to penetrate the top layer of gold at an inconspicuous place on item. Carefully apply a drop of nitric acid to the mark and see if the mark turns green or milky. There will be NO reaction if the bangle is either gold or mostly gold.

Regards
Yvonne

Childs 9ct Gold Lined Bracelet
by: Eleanor

I have a very old childs bangle hollow (with teeth bite indentations) marked 9ct LINED [Rodd] weight 11g.
It was given to me years ago as play jewellery and I would like to sell it at gold price.
I believe that 9ct at 11g AUD is $230 but as this is only plated what is a realistic amount I should expect?
Any somewhat educated idea would be helpful as I have none. Thanks

Rodd was a company founded in Melbourne Australia by Mr Rodd in 1919, the company lasted into the early 80's, the bracelet is made from 9ct rolled gold, ld is the abbreviation for lined, or rolled gold, not plated, Rodd,a good quality manufacturer, he died in 2009 in his 90's

9 LD - Plated Gold
by: Anonymous

9LD stands for 9ct lined (old term for plated)

rodd was the manufacturer.

So basically it's a 9ct plated base metal bracelet.

Platinum plus Iridium Jewelry
by: Anonymous

Interesting point Alison, you don't see that many platinum bracelets. The cost I suppose, with platinum being the most expensive precious metal, and bracelets requiring more metal than say a ring, a bracelet would work out too expensive for many of us. Also the 9 would suggest a gold standard.

We need a photo of this mark. The approximate age, and any related history you have will help. Geo you are welcome to upload a photo in a follow-up submission Please type "Bracelet stamped 9 ld rodd gold?" in the subject title. Thank you

What color is it?
by: Anonymous

Good afternoon Geo, what color metal is the bracelet made of? Maybe it's a responsibility mark. If the bracelet is a white or a silvery grey color metal, it could be platinum? Platinum has 10 % IRIDIUM.
