The black cameo on this ring is actually a dark grey color and carved out of Hematite, the mineral form of iron oxide (Fe2O3).
This type of cameos, usually appear on the rings from 1950's and don't bear any artistic value. The crack or other damage brings the value further down. Overall it's a good looking ring, so worth to keep it.

The Value of A Cameo by: Yvonne
Good Afternoon!
Kathleen, the material is very dark as you mention, it doesn't appear to be shell. Cameo is made from various materials, also composite material. You can read more about cameo HERE.
The value of a cameo is governed by a number of factors.
Condition or grade is one of the most important in terms of how much your jewelry is worth. The chip will affect the value.
Other factors, are rarity, aesthetics, global trends, age, provenance, material, and if the item has been referenced or listed in any periodicals or catalogues.
The markings on the band, if any, also help in identification.
