Hello. I have a gold pendant which has the left facing dog head and the letter "A" in front of its nose as well. There is something behind the dog's head, but can't quite make it out. Very confusing that everything I read says the dog head is a silver hallmark when the piece I have is clearly gold (like Mario's). Does anyone have an explanation for this? I've scoured the web and haven't found an answer.

Austro- Hungarian hallmarks under unification by: Anonymous
Hi Mario thanks for writing in.
Both are separate countries but while united (1864 - 1919), Austria and Hungary used numerous marks or standards until the 1920s. These varied by Town, Loth Number, or Period.
Later, each country used their own marks and standards. The letter indicates the city of assay. A is Vienna. The dogs head is usually associated with silver.
